Eastern Salt Company was formerly the home to the United States Lighthouse Service.
The Eastern Salt Company is a family owned operated business that distributes quality road salt to communities along the U.S. east coast located in Chelsea, Massachusetts.
Three houses across the street from what is now the Eastern Salt Company were the homes of Sea Captains. As with many shoreline areas, this part of Chelsea's waterfront was originally the site of shipbuilding, and lumber and coal yards.
The United States Lighthouse Service, was where light savers were Aids to Navigation, such as Lighthouse Tenders and Lightships were serviced, circa 1900-1950’s.
The three houses directly across the street from the now Eastern Salt company were homes to Sea Captains. As with many shoreline areas, this part of the Chelsea waterfront was originally the site of shipbuilding, and lumber and coal yards. From the late 1800's until about the 1950's this location served as a service depot for lightships in New England and the Eastern seaboard, and also as storage for harbor buoys, lighthouse supplies, etc.
The property just North of Eastern Salt was once home to Green Shipyard. During World War II the Green Shipyard was taken under Wartime Powers Act by the Department of the Navy and served in the war effort as an annex for the nearby Charlestown Navy Yard.
The remains of the dry dock still exist amongst the old pilings.
